Automotive products are Japan's single largest export category, and HS codes 8703 (passenger vehicles) and 8708 (auto parts) have long been the pillars supporting Japan's trade surplus. Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and other Japanese manufacturers maintain local production facilities around the world while continuously exporting finished vehicles and high-value-added parts manufactured domestically.

From 2023 to 2024, export values reached historic highs supported in part by a weak yen. At the same time, the rapid shift to EVs (electric vehicles) in the Chinese market caused a declining trend in passenger car exports to China. North America, Europe, and Australia have consequently become the primary axes of vehicle exports.
