Analysis Features Walkthrough — Trend, Treemap, Sankey on Japan Auto Exports
The analysis page ships with trend, treemap, sankey, compare, and forecast views. This post walks through each one using a concrete example: Japan's 2024 vehicle exports of ¥22.8T (HS 87).
Trend view — when did it move
Plotting HS 87 monthly values across 2022–2024 shows the US export ramp accelerating mid-2023. Annually, exports to the US went from ¥5.63T (2022) → ¥7.15T (2023) → ¥7.50T (2024). Exports to China drifted down (¥1.63T → ¥1.43T → ¥1.39T) over the same period.
A 3-way toggle between value / quantity / unit price separates "more volume" from "higher price" stories.
Treemap — what's biggest, at a glance
Drawing 2024 exports (¥96.4T total) as a treemap by HS2 makes the top three categories (HS 87 ¥22.8T / HS 84 ¥18.9T / HS 85 ¥14.7T) dominate the canvas, followed by HS 90 (precision instruments, ¥5.3T) and HS 72 (steel, ¥4.0T). It's immediate visual evidence of how concentrated Japan's outbound mix is.
Sankey — commodity × country × port flow
Sankey diagrams chain three steps: e.g. "HS 8703 (passenger cars) → US / China / Australia → Nagoya / Yokohama / Kobe." The US-bound band (¥7.5T of the ¥16.2T HS 8703 export total) dominates the flow, and almost all of it routes through Nagoya customs, where 2024 exports totaled ¥15.7T.
Compare view — period vs period, country vs country
"How did HS 87 exports to the US change from 2022 H2 to 2024 H2?" Compare puts the two side-by-side with delta %: ¥5.63T → ¥7.50T = +33%; Australia ¥1.16T → ¥1.60T = +38%. The same tool also handles country-vs-country at fixed HS code.
Forecast view — simple linear / exponential models
Forecasts the next 12 months from the prior 36, choosing among linear regression, exponential smoothing, or seasonally adjusted variants. Treat the output as "what if the past trend continues" — useful as a starting point for budget conversations, not as a market call.
Shared affordances
- The top filter bar (HS code / country / port / period) is preserved across views — switch views without re-entering conditions
- The left numeric sidebar (value / quantity / unit-price histograms) lets you exclude outlier months
- Any result exports to CSV / Excel / PDF
